The spiritual danger is that little by little one begins to understand religion as a system of symbols and customs rather than understand it as a challenge to spiritual renewal. More effort goes into concocting “delicious Lenten dishes” or making beautiful Easter baskets than into fasting and participating in the spiritual reality of Lent and Easter.
