Perfumed

Who is this coming up from the wilderness
like a column of smoke,
perfumed with myrrh and incense
made from all the spices of the merchant?
-Song of Songs 3: 6-

According to the legend of St. Polycarp, the fires of his martyrdom became a great sail, a vaulted chamber, an oven in which the saint baked like a loaf of bread, a furnace in which he was refined like gold or silver. A smell like incense pervaded the air.
